Pitbulls - Rescues Pictures - History
Pitbulls have relevance to dogs that were bred for pit fighting in the 1800s. This was a sport extremely popular in Great Britain. The essence of entertainment was in initiating fights between a bull and a dog.
The dogs were very tenacious and strong and were capable of grabbing the bull by the ear or nose and hanging on the animal until it fell down. This way, the meat of the killed bull was considered
much more tender, which surely was dubious.
In 1835, the bloody sport was banned, which resulted in a decrease of bulldogs. However, breeders who valued strength and aggressiveness in the dogs continued to produce fierce companions for dog fighting. They crossed the Bulldog and some terrier breed to produce the Pitbull terrier.
These dogs were very strong and had a high pain threshold. Fierceness and aggression towards other dogs were the priority for breeders. They did well not only in dog fighting but also in herding, weight pulling, protection, etc.
Pitbulls - Rescues Pictures - Recognition
The United Kennel Club recognized Pitbulls in 1898, whereas the American Kennel Club avoided recognizing fighting dogs until 1936. It was then when the AKC recognized the breed as the Staffordshire Terrier and changed the name later to the American Staffordshire Terrier. Nowadays, pitbulls are used for protection and serve as companions.
